Ladybird - nonsense? Never!
I have never read anything specific about this apart from the usual rule: At with a space, in with a place, but they are certainly used interchangeably in British English: I work at the school/I work in the school. In fact, I would never have given this problem a moment s consideration. What a lot I m learning! |

Hi guys... I am back from my mini holidays!
Both are correct.
I think the problem is with "spaces" - you need to use "at" always - like "at the beach, at the bus stop..." - but for places you can use "in" or "at".
ALSO, sometimes a place is also a space so these things are often overlapping and that s what confuses people at times.
In the clinic, where I work, is a bird called Tammy. At the clinic, where I work, is a bird called Tammy.
I work in a hospital. I work at a hospital.
She reads books at the library in Kensington. She reads books in the library in Kensington.
They study Science in school. They study Science at school.
All the above are correct.

As a native (lol) I would agree with ballycastle1. I would say that I work AT the school and I work IN the maths department. AT implies a more general area, IN implies a specific area or subject.
more examples:
I work at the bank. I work in the wages department.
I work at Marks&Spencers, in purchasing.
Hope that helps |
