How to teach conversation skills?

Hello,

I m new here and I ve already got a question:
I will be teaching a group of 3 adults, intermediate level (A2). They want to focus on the use of English in everyday life.
What is the best way to teach conversation skills?
I think I ll start with general questions and answers (giving directions, settling a problem at the airport and so on), teaching first the necessary vocabulary and letting them do role plays after that. Is that a good approach?

But talking is not everything, they also have to understand what other people say. Where could I find listening exercises about general topics?

Thanks in advance,
S.

Hey there snafu!

Just curious - A2 Intermediate is based on what grading?
Acc to CEF, A2 would be Elementary, do you use a different scale? I d love to know if there are other scales besides the one that I know! Smile

That s what I do in class for conversation:

Here is something more:

Hi,
what I usually do is, I find an interesing article and I make a lesson plan.
How you might ask?

1. pick an interesting short article
2. Make intro questions
3. pull out the vocabulary and possible collocations
4. make questions related to the text
5. closing discussion and vocab review.

Vocab should be implemented in a fun way, before they read the article.
It should be used by the students when they answer the questions or when they discuss the article.
Reviewing the new words at the end of class with "fixate" the vocabulary.
If necessary make them write a story/sentences/summary...etc, for homework using the new words.

:D

Conversation is totally pointless with out learning something new :D

Thumbs Up
