You could look it up under Google. It is not a religious holiday at all. It belongs to American (and British) history. A very important topic for an English teacher.

Originally, it was a thanksgiving to the God of Heaven (Jehovah) for giving them enough food for the year and probably to say thanks for giving them a new land to live in free of persecution. The Pilgrims were Puritans and thus religious since they came out of the Anglican church. They took a Bible with them and set up a church so I am sure it began as a religious commemoration.
