I need your help.....

Hi there!!

I need your help once more L

Could you please tell me which of the following options is correct?

People knew that the sales season started on the first of January.

The sales season was known to (have started/start) on the first of January.

Everyone believed that the match was an antique, but it was a fake.

The match was believed to (have been/be) an antique, but it was a fake.

Management announced that Piers was salesperson of the year.

Piers was announced to (be/have been) salesperson of the year.

We expect that the rate of inflation will rise.

The rate of inflation is expected to (rise/????)

Many, many, many thanks in advance!!!!

Ummm, SIlvia, do you have any further information to help you choose the correct answer?

it could be argued in many cases that either is correct for several of them, depending on context...
e.g. 1 - start the sales season starts on the 1st of January every year/this year because of advertising prior to the 1st of January.
have started - it is now after the 1st of January & people knew prior to now that the sales started on 1st January.
Please give a little context behind the questions.
Regards,
AB

Hi alien boy!!

They are just single sentences to practise CAUSATIVE HAVE. They were not taken from a text, if that s what you are suggesting Ermm

hi,
first of all I think that they are sentences turned from active voice into passive voice and not causative form. The second verb after the passive verb is turned into infinitive. When in the first sentence this verb is in a past tense it is turned into perfect infinitive:

People knew that the sales season started on the first of January.

The sales season was known to (have started/start) on the first of January.

When in the first sentence this verb is in a present/future  tense it is turned into infinitive:

We expect that the rate of inflation will rise.

The rate of inflation is expected to (rise/????)

That s my opinion. I hope it helps.
