CONFUSED I AM....

GOOD EVENING EVENING EVERYONE...

I HAVE COME UPON A PROBLEM.. AND HAVE BEEN AT IT FOR HOURS...CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHETHER THIS MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION IS CORRECT AND WHY IT IS RIGHT OR WRONG...?
I HAVE MY OWN THEORY BUT I WOULD REALLY LIKE OPINIONS....

"Can I borrow a screwdriver and some screws?"
"____________some tools in my tool box, take as many as you need"
a. It s                              c. They aren t
b. They are                     d. There s  (which is the answer)

Thanks in advance....I m grateful...

I think that option b. should be "There are"
but   everybody  makes mistakes

my eyes looked for an answer "there are". the question with those multiple choices seemto be wrong to me.

The answer should definitely be "there are" so maybe you can change it to be one of the options?

There is a screwdriver in my toolbox (referring to something singular)
There are some tools in my toolbox (referring to something plural)

I fully agree with previous answers but would point out that in speech,  the use of the singular There s...   is fairly commonplace - just laziness, I think.

Hi GP

There are is the grammatically correct answer.

However, in the natural flow of coversational speech there are often appears to be contracted to theres if the following word starts with s.  This is part of the process of assimilation where the sound at the end of one word takes on the sound of the beginning of the next word.

It would be quite unusual for a NS to say to another NS "there are some tools in my toolbox".  Instead, it would sound like "theres some tools in my tool box" though thats not how we would write it.

I think the question has a typing error (or typo as we say.)There are is the grammatically correct answer.

Cheers
