How should we say:
1. A play is a story that people watch rather than read.
2. A play is a story that people watch but not read.
 I think
1.They would better watch , than ...
2. They want to watch , but NOT read.
 No , I am really confused Confused

A play is a story that people watch but don �t read
is  correct / descriptive
 
they should rather watch than.....   / here you give your opinion
 
they want to watch but they don �t want to read  / here you express an intention
 
According to me these sentences are correct but there a few differences in the meaning
