Can u tell me which sentence is right and why ?

I sometimes also get confused whether to say for instance:
- Education is significant in our life
- Education is significant in our lives
I hope someone clears up this confusion

Hi,

When you use the pronoun "our," you want to make the noun that follows it plural.

Apples are good for our bodies. (more than one body)

Education is significant in our lives. (more than one life)

I hope this helps.

Hi Noor,
As you can see from the following link, there is some disagreement among experts.

Oh, I always have doubt with "our" and "their". Usually our or their follows a plural noun. But I think it is not always the case. Imagine Peter and Susan are speaking and they say... We bought a new house. Thats our house! In this case, there is only one house, it wouldn t make sense to say ....our houses.  There are other cases like the one Ive just mentioned. It is confusing :)

Hello, it depends on what you want to communicate. look this example i found in a dictionary:

  • Our house is just a few hundred yards from yours.

if we would live in different houses we would have said :

  • Our houses are  just a few hundred yards from yours.

the thing is if the object belongs to "we" or if we are talking of our houses but separately ones.

the other day I found in a test Our brain and I thought it is ok because each of us have got only one brain.

so It depends on what are we really communicating.

Gigi...your examples show just how confusing it must be for non native speakers.

Our house is just a few hundred yards from yours...you explained it nicely by saying one house belongs to "we" or  rather "us". In other words, 1 person belonging to a pair or group is explaining that their house is just a few yards from "yours" which could represent 1 or more people.

Our houses are just a few hundred yards from yours...represents 2 or more people with 2 or more houses telling "yours" how close their houses are.

Yours never has an apostrophe to show possession even though many native speakers use one. :)

Maybe I made it more confusing????
