Hi loverman. We use DC after Washington to distinguish it from Washigton State.

United States

Washington, District of Columbia is a special "district" that does not belong to any state of the United States, it is it s own "district".

The founders of the USA did this to prevent any one state from potentially having more power over the others because the Capital of the USA was there.

Originally, the city of Washington was within the "District of Columbia" later they were merged together.
