Do you say respect the margins when students write?
thanks

Depends on the level of the students. We would generally say write inside or between the lines with young children and later on we might use margins instead of lines but lines would be more common.

We would not say respect the margin, its a very strong word to use in that context.

We might say: "Dont write in the margin."

I d just say "leave clear margins", or perhaps: "a good piece of writing must have clear margins".
