How can i present the difference between ( Exactly, Nearly, Over and about) when we use them for amount  of things

I know that when we know the amount we will use / exactly, nearly and over/

and when we don t know we will use about

in the teacher s  book they mentioned that:

-about 11% `of journeys in Sweden are by bus or train. (we should correct the mistake)

they said we should use exactly or over 10% insted of about .  i didn t understand why?

Also

- Nearly 10% of journeys in Switzerland are by bicycle.

they said we should use exactly  insted of nearly

- over 15% of journeys in England are by bus or train.
over rong we should use Nearly insted of over

help me please i dont understand please

I ll be honest - I don t understand either.

Grammatically, using about is correct. I assume that the mistake has something to do with the fact that the text the statements come from gives exact details. Best I ve got, I m afraid!

Regarding the presentation, could you use a continuum going from exactly to about?

Exactly-->Nearly-->About
                   |
                   |
                Over

Definitons
Exactly (Precisely known)
Nearly (almost, close to, just under)
About (approximately, more or less, an estimate)
Over(too much, more than, greater than)

Exactly = 100% (referring to the amount)
Nearly  = 90-99% (referring to the amount)
About = 80-90% (referring to accuracy)
Over > (referring to the amount)

Since we use measurements in cooking, is there a recipe you can use with the students. I had the students make a fruit salad and it was successsful. Some ingredients had to be measured, others counted, or estimated.

I don t know how old your students are, but if they are not allowed to use a knife to peel the fruit, then you can use dried fruits and small fruits: berries, cherries, grapes, or prepare some fresh fruits and place them in baggies for the children to mix into their salad.

If you have young students, you could read the folktale, Stone Soup, with them and either make a vegetable soup with them, or create a cardboard cooking pot prop and tagboard or paper vegetables to add to the "soup."
I made a large black cauldron prop and the students added their tagboard vegetables to it.
