Wouldn �t �earlier � be better, �before � would imply that the writer has never written them anything, depends on the context

Those are better options.

There are some good options above, but you might also turn it around and say,
 
Sorry for taking so long to write (informal).
 
I apologize for not writing sooner 
     
would be a good formal option, in my opinion.
