Hi Nereis

It is short for Australian.  Instead of saying I m an Australian many will say I m an Aussie / Ozzie.  Although there are two spellings both are pronounced the same, i.e. with a Z sound.  Both spellings are acceptable.

It usually refers to people born in Australia, or who have called Oz (Australia) home for a long time,  regardless of ethnicity.  [It s always spelt as Oz and never as Aus]

At international sporting events you will often hear the Aussies shouting our catchcry of Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi which has been around for about twenty years or so but really made it s mark during the Sydney Olympics.

Nice link renko6

Cheers from a dinky di true blue first generation ozzie
