Paternity or fatherhood?

Paternity or fatherhood?

Which sentence is more used?

My father didn t want to assume paternity.
 or
My father didn t want to assume fatherhood.

Thanks in advance.

Hi.

From my point of view I think that the second one is more appropriate. It sounds more "English".
Hope it helps.

For me "paternity" is more of a biological sense, and fatherhood is more of an caring/raising sense. I would interpret "He didn t want to assume paternity" as he was denying that the child was his. "He didn t want to assume fatherhood" to me seems like he knows the child is his but isn t fulfilling his responsibilities (he left the family, isn t paying child support, etc.)
