hello dear teachers
I have recently downloaded a worksheet about expressing surprise
i found this type of sentences : how ugly is the alien !
                                                  how pretty is she !
but I know that it should be : how ugly the alien is !
                                               how pretty she is !
how noisy the town is !
please tell me which is correct ?
thanks

You re right! To be honest though I think it s a little old fashioned and it s enough for students to use the much simpler phrases:

Wow! The alien is ugly!

Until very high levels at least.

Hi!
I agree with RabbitWho - it s not worthwhile teaching structures such as:

       How beautiful she is.

Because they are simply not used (except maybe in old context, such as the film Gone with the Wind).  It s really not english in use now.

       Wow! That alien is ugly!

Would be better to express surprise

The structure:

I cant believe how ugly the alien is!

is used but not so much for the immediate expression of surprise.

Yep, they re rather dated I agree.

How about "boy, is she ugly!" or " **** crap, she s ugly" though best not to use that one!

"goodness me, she s so ugly!" or "gosh, she s so ugly"

I m amazed at how many Ss don t know that you can use "so" to emphasise a characteristic
