"lay" means to put sth in a suitable position for a particular purpose. It s an irregular verb (pt, pp laid).
"lie" means not to tell the truth / to mislead. It also has the same meaning of "lay".
"rose" is the past simple form of "rise" and it s a synonym of "arise" = to appear / occur"
"to rise" = to go upward
These definitions are taken from "Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionay". You can get more information if you check it. The best way to know the meaning of a word is when you put it in its context.

Concerning the activities you could just give the learners a worksheet with a matching exercise. you put pictures of the sunrise for example and a greengrocer laying goods along with other pictures and ask them to match each verb with the correct sentence. As you know "A picture is worth a thousand words". You will so much time and effort by using pictures.
Hope you find my answer helpful and useful for you.
