Most of us think that to protect the environment is the task of the authorities and environment............................... protectors.
Which is the correct answer: environment or environmental? or both? and why?

it must be environment protectors
environment is the object of "protectors". what do they protect? children �s rights? rare species? grammatical purity? no - the environment!!!
if it was "environmental" it would describe the kind of protectors they are, like
"efficient protectors", "kind protectors", "crazy protectors".
the adjective would give information about the kind of protectors they are, but not about WHAT they protect
