In my opinion the first one should be correct as you wrote but in one of the book (I teach at school) I found the second sentence and it made me confused.

Thanks for explanation Liz. In my language it sounds better - on the farm, but as I see I have made a mistake because it should be - IN THE FARM

Liz s explanation is generally true.  However, in this instance, correct usage is "on the farm" or "on a farm".

what it is common in English is to say

Pigs live on the farm. even if it sounds not . this the right answer. to use "in a farm" is a common mistake.
it is a little bit ridiculous but you may refer to the song of "Old Mc Donald Farm"

You are right hokage8002 - the song Old McDonald can be a good explanation for my students. Thanks a lot !

Old McDonald had a farm . . .
and on that farm he had a cow . . .

Thank you all for your help !!!Hug

I will go to bed and sing this song Smile Wink

I ve always learnt that we should use the preposition "on" with "farm". Michael Swan calls it a special expression.

Have a good night,

Just think of the song -

"How you gonna keep them down on the farm, after they ve seen Paris!
"

You live on a farm - never in a farm.
