Rules for use of gerunds and infinitives

Hi friends
I need your HELPPPPPPPPPPPPP

Im teaching a new student from a private school.  She ll have a test on next monday . I  need to know how to teach her when a verb goes in infinitive form or in gerund after another verb. In verbs like: avoid, afford, finish, etc.

Thanks in advance.

The following verbs are followed by the infinitive with TO
-      To want,
-      To like,
-      To wish,
-      To expect,
-      To order, etc

Example: She wants me to sing.

Infinitive without TO are
- Modal (may, can, could, must ...)
- Let with the sense to give permission
- Make with the sense to cause
Exemple: She lets him do what he likes.
              You make me laugh.

GERUND

as a subject:

Ex:   Painting is a nice hobby.

as a complement:

Ex: He loves sailing.

A MUST after
a) verbs like those:

a)

-       To like

-       To love,

-       To hate,

-       To prefer,

-       To be fond of,

-       To go (sense to do an activity),

-       I can t bear,

-    I don t mind etc

b) ALL the preposition except "to":

-       About, At, By, For, From, In, Into, Of, On, With, etc...

Ex:   He went out without looking at the door.

For gerunds and infinitives after verbs there isn t a rule - it s all about collocations. Some verbs take the gerund, others the infinitive. Unfortunately, you have to learn each one separately!

I usually give my students the list I uploaded some time ago and play a memory game with them. I let them 20 minutes to study them and then I give them  an exercise to complete with the gerund or infinitive. The students who does it better, gets an extra point. Perhaps you can adapt it to your student.
