Sneezing

Hi everyone...

Im hesitating about this situation,

When someone sneezes, should he/she apologize and say "sorry" or "excuse me"...
On the other hand, people around have to say Bless you, right? Is there another word or expression?
And finally what should the person who sneezed answer? Just "thank you"

Id appreciate your help.

People don t usually apologize for a sneeze - it s a natural thing.
You can say bless you or Gesundheit!
and most people just answer thanks.

So you can use the German word Gesundheit in English :-) that s funny I didn t know that.

Well, I think that people do apologize for sneezing, at least in Latin American countries (that s what I noticed) Must be a cultural thing.
It might be a bit old fashioned to do so, but there are people who apologize. I do, actually, especially if I m talking and I have to stop in the middle of a sentence because of a sneeze. I say "sorry" and then I go on talking.

Yeah, I don t know the reason why the German word "Gesundheit" is used, but "Bless you" is used less often these days (or at least discouraged from using) in politically correct North America for religious reasons.

English mothers teach their children to use "pardon me" in such situations.

Hi all

In the circles I mix in we usually say excuse me after a sneeze.  I think many of my colleagues/friends would think it impolite if we don t but that s just my opinion and I can t speak for the rest of my nation because I think there are differing opinions.  I was raised to always say excuse me.

Yes we do say bless you or Gesundheit and you reply with thanks or thank you.

Cheers
