I have always loved this one by Khalil Gibran, an awesome poet with lots of powerful insight in his poems.

Hi  :-)!

I m quite sure this is not the kind of poem you are looking for but take a peek at this site. There are some really amusing poems about teachers. You may find them useful for class purposes. I ve used some of them in my classes and they work really well with the students.

There s one about teenagers that I really enjoy. It won t most likely meet your goal but here it goes anyway!

What is a Teenager?

What is a teenager?

I thought one day.

I knew what he was,

But what could I say?

He is noise and confusion.

He is silence that is deep.

He is sunshine and laughter,

or a cloud that will weep.

He is swift as an arrow.

He is a waster of time.

He wants to be rich,

But cannot save a dime.

He is rude and nasty.

He is polite as can be.

He wants parental guidance,

But fights to be free.

He is aggressive and bossy.

He is timid and shy.

He knows all the answers,

But still asks "Why".

He is awkward and clumsy.

He is graceful and poised.

He is ever changing,

But do not be annoyed.

What is a teenager?

I was thinking one day.

He is the future unfolding,

So, do not stand in his way.

One of my favorites...

The Joy of Teaching

Jesus took his disciples up the mountain and gathering them around him, he spoke:

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven...
Blessed are the meek...
Blessed are they that mourn...
Blessed are the merciful...
Blessed are they that thirst for justice when persecuted...
Blessed are you when you suffer...
Be glad and rejoice for your reward is great in heaven.

Then Simon Peter said, "Are we supposed to know this?"
And Andrew said, "Do we have to write this down?"
And James said, "Is this examinable?"
And Phillip said, "Is there an answer guide in the library?"
And Bartholomew said, "What came after poor?"
And John said, "The other disciples didn t have to learn this!"
And Mark said, "Don t take the overhead off yet."
And Matthew went to the bathroom.

One of the Pharisees who was present asked to see Jesus lesson plan and enquired of Jesus, "Where are your anticipatory set and your objectives in the cognitive domain?"

... and Jesus wept.

From the Internet, source unknown.

If you want something with a bit more iambic pentameter...

Verbally Insane

We ll begin with a box, and the plural is boxes,
but the plural of ox became oxen not oxes.
One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese,
yet the plural of moose should never be meese.
You may find a lone mouse or a nest full of mice,
yet the plural of house is houses, not hice.

If the plural of man is always called men,
why shouldn t the plural of pan be called pen?
If I spoke of my foot and show you my feet,
and I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet?
If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth,
why shouldn t the plural of booth be called beeth?

Then one may be that, and three would be those,
yet hat in the plural would never be hose,
and the plural of cat is cats, not cose.
We speak of a brother and also of brethren,
but though we say mother, we never say methren.
Then the masculine pronouns are he, his and him,
but imagine the feminine, she, shis and shim.

Let s face it - English is a crazy language.
There is no egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger;
neither apple nor pine in pineapple.
English muffins weren t invented in England.
We take English for granted.
But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that
quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square,
and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

And why is it that writers write but fingers don t fing, grocers
don t groce and hammers don t ham?
Doesn t it seem crazy that you can make amends but not
one amend? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get
rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?

If teachers taught, why didn t preachers praught?
If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?
Sometimes I think all the folks who grew up speaking English
should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane.

In what other language do people recite at a play and
play at a recital? We ship by truck but send cargo by ship.
We have noses that run and feet that smell.
And how can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same,
while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites?

You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language
in which your house can burn up as it burns down,
in which you fill in a form by filling it out,
and in which an alarm goes off by going on.

So if Dad is Pop, how come Mom isn t Mop?

And I ve often wondered: How come we park in a driveway and drive on
a parkway? Makes no sense!

I hope this helps!

An excerpt from

The Heart of a Teacher

by Paula Fox

The child arrives like a mystery box...
with puzzle pieces inside
some of the pieces are broken or missing...
and others just seem to hide

But the HEART of a teacher can sort them out...
and help the child to see
the potential for greatness he has within...
a picture of what he can be

Her goal isn t just to teach knowledge...
by filling the box with more parts
it s putting the pieces together...
and creating a work of art

The process is painfully slow at times...
some need more help than others
each child is a work in progress...
with assorted shapes and colors

First she creates a classroom...
where the child can feel safe in school
where he never feels threatened or afraid to try...
and kindness is always the rule

She knows that a child
can achieve much more
when he feels secure inside
when he s valued and loved...
and believes in himself
...and he has a sense of pride

She models and teaches good character...
and respect for one another
how to focus on strengths...not weaknesses
and how to encourage each other

She gives the child the freedom he needs...
to make choices on his own
so he learns to become more responsible...
and is able to stand alone

He s taught to be strong and think for himself...
as his soul and spirit heal
and the puzzle that s taking shape inside...
has a much more positive feel

The child discovers the joy that comes...
from learning something new...
and his vision grows as he begins
to see all the things that he can do

A picture is formed as more pieces fit...
an image of the child within
with greater strength and confidence...
and a belief that he can win!

All because a hero was there...
in the HEART of a teacher who cared
enabling the child to become much more...
than he ever imagined...or dared

A teacher with a HEART for her children...
knows what teaching is all about
she may not have all the answers...
but on this...she has no doubt

When asked which subjects she loved to teach,
she answered this way and smiled...
"It s not the subjects that matter...
It s all about teaching the CHILD."
