The sea is getting rough.

Hi Everyone

My student asked me recently what words or phrases he could use to describe the ocean or waves when the weather turns stormy.

So far I ve got:

choppy
towering waves
crashing waves
rough sea

Can anyone think of others?

Cheers in advance

Brian

Taken from www.thesaurus.com

Main Entry: wild
Part of Speech: adjective
Definition: intense, stormy
Synonyms: blustering, blustery, choppy , disturbed, furious, howling, inclement, raging, rough, storming, tempestuous, turbulent, violent
Antonyms: calm, mild, moderate

But can a native speaker confirm that all these adjectives can be used to describe the ocean / waves?

Hi there!! In cases like these, you might just want to check the oxford collocations dictionary.
Here s a link to check online, but it s not as complete as the one you can download or buy.

http://www.lixiaolai.com/ocd/index.html

Here are some of the adjectives that go with the noun "sea" and have similar meanings to "stormy"

choppy / heavy / mountainous / raging / rough
(I specially like "raging seas", I think it s quite graphic)

And here are some adjectives that collocate with "waves"

big / enormous / giant / great / huge / mountainous
rogue (this adjective is usually used with animals, but it collocates with waves, meaning "dangerous")

Hope you find it useful!!!

blustering, blustery, choppy , disturbed, furious, howling, inclement, raging, rough, storming, tempestuous, turbulent, violent

Of these words some would be better to describe the wind rather than the sea. Here s how I would use them:

blustering wind
blustery day (very windy)
choppy waves (small rough waves)
howling wind
inclement weather (it might rain)
raging storm, raging sea
rough sea
stormy seas
stormy weather
turbulent seas/ocean
furious storm
violent storm

also: crashing waves (onto the beach)

Another idea is to check the variations in a corpus.  There are many, but I use COCA (http://www.americancorpus.org/) because it s free and US English.  It has collocations, too.
