Thank you all so much dear friends! You �ve been extremely helpful. I �ve been laughed at by a fellow English teacher(!!!?) for telling my students that both pronunciations are correct. So even more opinions or personal experiences will be welcome.

You are right; they are fools. Direct them to any half-decent dictionary which provides an IPA guide. Better still, you can do an instant online check. For example, the lovely, free online Merriam-Webster Dictionary (complete with pronunciations):


It astonishes me that some so-called �linguists � won �t even take the time to check readily-available sources of usage/pronunciation etc, instead relying on the "I was always taught..." argument.
