LINKING WORDS/SOUNDS

Hi, Dear teachers. Can you help me?

Can you tell the rules for linking words?

I have a problem with the book Im working. Its say students should listen the sentences and say how many words are there and then they have the sentences written on their books to check.

The question is I cant understand if we count the words written or the words they here. For example, in the sentence: Everybodys got a secret talent. I think there are 6 words, but the book says 5.

The same with the sentence: Lets spend the night in any other town. I think there are 9 words, but the book says 8.

Can you explain why?

Im so confused about linking words or words sounds.

 Thanks

Contractions are shortened words and are counted as one word. They are made from two words, but become one word with an apostrophe.

Let s = Let us
Everybody s =everybody has

Let s go! - 2 words
Don t! - 1 word
