ESL vs EFL
If someone moves to an English speaking country from a non-English speaking country to live they would learn English as their second language.

If someone in a non- English speaking country learns English, they are learning English as a foreign language.

A-a-ahh, the joys of a living language:  always changing and developing.  Particularly true in fields with a lot of research and specialization going on.

And just to make things more confusing:  there are some folks who advocate ESOL or TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), since English is a 3rd, 4th, etc. language for some people.  In theory, it s supposed to include both ESL and EFL.

That s right Sue.  My qualification is actually TESOL and not ESL/EFL.  Our indigenous people for example speak several lanaguages and English is often their third or fourth language.  Many of my current international students speak three other languages.  I prefer TESOL to ESL but people commonly use ESL meaning their second, third or fourth language.
