It would be nice if we (native English speakers) had 2 clear groups but often we �ll say �do � even though the idea of �make � (create) might also be appropriate. In this kind of either/ or, it �s down to whether I feel like indicating that I �m doing (activity) or making (creating).
e.g.
I �m just doing this cake (I �m cooking it and then I �ll be decorating it). While I often use �make � as an example, it would be perfectly common to use �do � in speaking.
But in the activities where we generally say �do �, it wouldn �t be OK to say make.
So we don �t say:
I �m making the shopping. BUT as in your example, making music is fine, and a very expressive way of saying that one is playing an instrument.
Perhaps you could write up the activities (or use pictures) that you have in mind in 2 lists, and see if they realise that one group is about doing and the other is more creative ie making. Just a thought.
