Can you help me with the meaning of these words? "upwards" / "forwards"/ "backwards"

Hi everybody,

I use these words instinctively, but tomorrow I will have to explain my FCE students why in the given sentence the word "upwards" is the correct one.

Most of these children, aged from six UPWARDS, were returning to Hong Kong.

Is "backwards" the opposite of "afterwards" or "upwards"?

Thanks in advance to everybody.

the suffixe -wards means "in direction of"

upwards : going up. Contrary : downwards.
forewards : going straight on before. Contrary : backwards : going back

ages from 6 upwards means from 6 to older.

hope this is useful.
