Explanation needed!!!

Hello there!
I need your  help again!
Could someone explain in plain English what someone means when he says:
"Man s status makes each individual an end in himself."
I am particularly puzzled by the meaning of the phrase "an end in himself".
Does it mean that what each man in interested in is his status?

Thanks in advance.

Dear Vicky,

In this speech by Eleanor Roosevelt, you will find a paragraph that begins with these words:

In a recent speech in Canada, Gladstone Murray said:

The central fact is that man is fundamentally a moral being, that the
light we have is imperfect does not matter so long as we are always
trying to improve it we are equal in sharing the moral freedom that
distinguishes us as men.
Mans status makes each individual an end in
himself.
No man is by nature simply the servant of the state or of
another man the ideal and fact of freedom and not
technology are the true distinguishing marks of our civilization.

I hope that this helps you.

Dear Vicky,

"Mans status makes each individual an end in
himself".

an end in itself
if an activity or action is an end in itself, it is important to you not because it will help you to achieve something else, but because you enjoy doing it or think that it is important Education should be an end in itself.

an end in itself
existing for its own sake; existing for no clear purpose. (*Typically: be ~; become ~.) For Bob, art is an end in itself. He doesnt hope to make any money from it. Learning is an end in itself. Knowledge does not have to have a practical application.

This is my opinion of what this sentence is trying to say.

"The status, or rank, or importance of Man, (every man, woman and child), born into the World as a free, moral being, with equal standing and equal rights, is special, personal, and unique to that individual.  This means that every individual is different from every other individual".

"It is this unique difference, one from another, that makes each individual worthy of special study".

"Every individual is important, for no other reason than because every individual is unique".

This is my opinion only!

Dear Les,

Thanks a lot for your reply. Actually, my sentence is part of Eleanor Rousevelt s speech
and I have to provide a translation of that text, but I got stuck at that point.

Once more,
Thanks for your help!
Have a nice day/ week!!!
