Hi everybody!
Recently I �ve been confused by pronouns:
I need some help.
Can you complete these tags with a pronoun:
Everyone searches for love, don �t / doesn �t ....(they? he? she?).........?
one always searches for love, don �t / doesn �t ....(they? he? she?).........?
someone took my bike, didn �t ...(they? he? she?).........?
whoever comes is my friend, don �t / doesn �t ....(they? he? she?).........?

These are my answers
Everyone searches for love,doesn �t he?
One always searches for love, doesn �t he?
Someone took my bike,didn �t he?

Usually the verb is the same as it is in basic form:
for ex.
singular
I don �t (yourself)
you don �t (the person you �re speaking to)
he, she, is doesn �t (the person you �re speaking about)
Plural
We don �t ( you and those with you)
you don �t (those you �re speaking to)
they don �t (the people you �re speaking about)
Therefore using that list, your answers would be:
Everyone searches for love, don �t they
one always searches for love, doesn �t one
someone took my bike, didn �t he or she,,,, BUT some would answer they to this one)
whoever comes is my friend, Isn �t he or aren �t they? (present)

I agree with Libertybelle, really well explained.
I would use, "didn�t they?" with the sentence, " someone took my bike,"
Two more sentences students may have problems with;
Let�s go, shall we?
Open your books, will you?

This has partially to do with trying to speak "gender neutral" 20-30yrs ago one would always use "he" if the sex of the person was not known. Because this is now considered by many to be chauvanistic(?), the tendence of the language is now to be as gender neutral as possible. The problem is that we don �t have a gender-neutral third person singular pronoun. The solution by most is to then use "they" for the first person as well. Though this is technically wrong, it is becoming very broadly accepted throughout the world and no longer consiered "wrong" in most circles.
So Liberty is correct to say: "one always searches for love, doesn �t one";
However, many would would say: "one always searches for love, don �t they" and it would mostly be accepted as okay.
This works for all of your examples, but I don �t understand your last example:
"whoever comes is my friend, don �t / doesn �t ....(they? he? she?).........?"
I think you want to use "aren �t they" vs "don �t they" |

Ok. Tag Question is followed by Pronoun , not a Noun. In this connection, is the word "ONE" a Noun or a Pronoun ? So what about this argument ?
See this ............. anyone, someone, somebody, anybody, nobody, everyone, every + Singular Noun, etc. take "They" as the Pronoun.
And in case of ........ nothing, something, anything, they take "It" as the Pronoun.
So think in that direction......... aren �t these correct ?
