If I �m not wrong, you can say "I �d rather stay home tonight" to express preference.
On the other hand if I say "I �d rather you stayed home with me tonight" I am using the structure you mentioned . Both are correct  (of course, different in meaning) .

I �d also accept "wasn �t used to driving" on the last one.

James hardly ever drove his car at night.     USED
