I need help

Hi,

Can you help me, please ?

I am always confused in differenciating if the last syllable stressed or not like the words travel, control and dial ??

How can I know if the last  syllable stressed ???

Thanks a lot in advance,
:)

As far as I know, there is no rule for the stress in English, so you just have to learn the stress with the word. It s possible that non-native speakers have been taught something about this that we native speakers don t learn about.

Salam

I guess you can know by either

1. pronouncing the word out loud

2. using a dictionary

* it depends if the word is a VERB or NOUN

But if you are concerned about doubling the last letter, you may look at this website. It s very helpful with easy rules.

good luck

Pretty, there s an interesting list of heteronyms here if you re interested, with phonetic transcriptions.

My old favourites:

With every number, my brain gets number and number.

 - and the slightly more risqu -

Do you know what a buck does to does?

By the way, Abdullah Ali, the link you gave seems to refer to US English (eg travelled/travelling exists quite happily in UK English despite the fact that the writer says it should never happen) and actually comes across as not only offensively prescriptive but downright confusing for learners.
