I �ve been puzzled over the use of the prepositions in or on in the following sentence:  The students write their answers in/on the lines.  I �ve been searching and I haven �t found a possible answer.  Perhaps, this would be the fastest way to know...10x!

Definitely on the lines, because the writing sits on the tops of the lines.

There is no doubt about this.
