I �ve been puzzled over the use of the prepositions in or on in the following sentence: The students write their answers in/on the lines. I �ve been searching and I haven �t found a possible answer. Perhaps, this would be the fastest way to know...10x! |

I would say, in the space .... or on the line. |

Definitely on the lines, because the writing sits on the tops of the lines.

You sign your name ON the dotted line. This is a well-know figure of speech. There is no doubt about this.
As Bruce wrote, you write on the already printed lines.
