what shame!/what a shame!

Hello there!

Ive got a question about these two expressions:what shame!/what a shame! Is their meaning different?
Do "what shame" mean you feel embarrassed and "what a shame" that you feel sorry??
Thanks in advance!

What shame!  could mean; How embarrassing!

What a shame!  would mean ; What a pity!

So Id say your meanings are correct.

 Have a great evening.

mariec is correct, but we would rarely say "What shame!" I think "How shameful!" would be more likely to be used.
