Large classes

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know where I can find useful tips for dividing students into pairs/small groups in a large class scenario? Let s say around 30 students...?
Any ideas, web links or books suggestions would be very helpful.

Thanks a lot!

Tata

If you do a Google search working with large classes youll find some useful articles written in PDF format. Ed

The advice offered in continuuing education workshops I attended was that you can pair students either according to their ability and level of proficiency, or you can pair students of uneven ability (where the stronger student tutors the weaker student).

They recommended not always pairing strong-weak or weak-weak together because the strong students may get tired of having to help the weaker students all the time, and may feel that they are not progressing as fast as they are able to. Weak-weak may be too lost to work productively, but then the teacher, who is monitoring the pair work can help them, if they get stuck. Making the students change partners sometimes helps build community in the classroom.

Sometimes students are randomly paired. Some students work well with a particular classmate, but they should also develop the skills necessary to work with anyone (for the workplace), and not just their favorite person.

Usually in the workshops I have attended, we pair up with the person sitting near us. We have also been allowed to choose our learning partner for pair work (but this can be time consuming if students are not used to pairing up).

Abraos, Fabola
