My tendency is to say "I will.." (it soundsmore firm/convincing)but I can �t back it up with rules.

"will" is a quick, spontaneous decision, "going to" sounds like some reflection has gone into the decision making.

I agree with Douglas, as I usually do. The "going to" choice just sounds too wordy, but not wrong.

According to the rules, �will � future is used for promises, and �going to � is used for personal plans and intentions. So �I promise mum I will do it later � is correct.
It �s true that �will � is used for sudden decisions, while �going to � is used for something premeditated.
