What films or programmes do you watch to improve your or your students English or just for pleasure?  Some of my favourites are:

I love watching the Doctor Who series, they are great. I haven t  tried with my students, perhaps this year that I m having  groups of studfents who are 16-17 years old.

Good question. I enjoy murder mysteries and such. I watch CSI (all of them), NCSI (both), Law and Order CI (I like shows with initials), Waking the Dead, any of the Poirot mysteries, Inspector Lewis, Miss Marple (anything Agatha Christie really). To improve my English, Sesame Street, Elmo does it for me.

Don t you think CSI is quite a bit too graphic for the students though, Ed?

What we like and what our students like are often two different things.
The more they can relate, the more interested they are.

For vocabulary understanding I use kid - teen films such as:

Percy Jackson and the Lightning thief
A Walk to Remember
Spy Kids for the younger students
Mathilda - also for the younger ones
10 things I hate about you

The sisterhood of the traveling pants
Fly away Home
Muppets Christmas Carol
Home Alone
Cars
Monsters Inc.

and also nature and animal films from discovery.

For the older students I use films to re-enforce topics. - for example:
The Rabbit-Proof Fence to teach about discrimination

Films with kids and about kids.
To these I make group discussion worksheets
Vocabulary training - word searches and questions
for pair work.  I m a firm believer in re-enforcement!!

Re. CSI - my parents would have a fit if I showed programs like that.
Much too violent and graphic.

Thank You all. I haven t seen some of the films so I will watch soon.  I also love Seinfeld
and musical Hair. Hair is the first on my list next to Master and Margarita and our Polish
Kieślowski s films
