SOunds perfectly right to me Mary,  except the first  sentence sounds more accepteable in the active form than in  the passive!Smile Let s wait for our honourable grammarians to give their enlightened view!

I d change the word order:

Unrelenting pressure is being placed on the worlds natural resources  by the rapid pace of technology and population growth.

The Pew sentence really needs more context. It sounds very abrupt as it is, but it is technically correct. The active sentence sounds much better.

The sentence has two objects so it can be changed into the passive in two ways:

The rapid pace of technology and population growth is placing unrelenting pressure on the worlds natural resources.

Unrelenting pressure is being placed on the worlds natural resources by the rapid pace of technology and population growth.

OR

The worlds natural resources are being placed  unrelenting pressure on by the rapid pace of technology and population growth.

But the first one is more common.
