PARTICIPLE CLAUSES

Dear nice collegues,

I have trouble teaching past participle clauses when the two clauses do not have the same subjects. How can I rewrite this sentence:
Our ammunition was exhausted, so we were forced to surrender.
and why this sentence is correct:
Bob was unable to concentrate in his class, his father having been taken to hospital.

Thank you very much for your assistance!

Our ammunition being exhausted, we were forced to surrender.
Having exhausted our ammunition, we were forced to surender.

As for sentence two "his father having been taken to hospital is the reason for his lack of concentration and we can use participle phrases to show reason.

I ve just been working on this with my class and I found  some useful stuff on this website. Off the top of my head I can t remember what but just search for it.
Cheers Joy
