Thank you for your help. However in Project English textbook there is a quiz.
What is the fastest animal in the world?
a) a cheetah
b) an ostrich
c) a lion
Why is there a then not the? Should the answer be The cheetah is the fastest animal...
Why?
Thank you again.

Hi, Martina.
I know exactly what quiz are you writing about (just have finished the section with my class:o)) I always use "A cheetah is the fastest animal in the world", because I don t mean  any particular animal.

We use "the dolphin" when referring to the class of animals.

The giraffe is the tallest animal.
The cheetah runs at very high speeds.
