as far as I know, you can only say the upcoming spring, the other way is not correct.

The first variant is correct if you say "This coming spring" look here. I �ve never heard of the upcoming spring, though. I did hear upcoming events, elections, seminars, court hearing, etc. Let �s see what the native speakers would say. Sophia

Upcoming sounds more grammatical and formal to me. Coming can be used in spoken language. |

Hi there
Both are correct and commonly used, sometimes interchangably, the latter used more in formal contexts.
Coming means in the future and upcoming is in the near future.
