Little Women adapted play transcript question

Is it a copyright violation to take a play and simiplify the sentences for EFL students?

http://www.eslprintables.com/forum/topic.asp?id=31803 was looking for an easy version of Litle Women by Alcott.

When students rewrite a play is it a copyright violation, if they have not asked for permission for the publisher?

I would like to share a file of the Little Women play in which I have simplified the sentences. I think it could be useful, but I would not like to upload it and then someone reports it as copyright infringement.

Can anyone share their insights and or experience on copyright guidelines for altering copyrighted texts for nonprofit educational uses?

Thank you in advance,
Mary

No problem whatsoever. Fair use should cover this but wait, there s even better news: copyright on Little Women has expired so it has now become public domain. (http://www.pdimages.com/stories.htm)

Thank you Phillip! That is good news indeed. Thank you for the useful link, too.

Yes, Philip, the copyright has expired on the novel, but not on the play Mary is referring to. However, I agree with you about Fair Use covering the situation, so there isn t a problem. It definitely won t be clear that the novel wasn t the direct source of Mary s work.

Well, when I was looking through the webpages, trying to help Nika with that one, I found a book which taught students specifically how to write a skit based on a famous literary work. So, copyright infringement? -- Nay. They "appropriate" or "personalize" the masterpiece to be able to feel it inside out so to speak.
What would you say to an adaptation of the novel or play which is so widely used for esl learners?

I have written  the owner of the site that hosts the play I simplified http://homeschooling.gomilpitas.com/explore/drama.htm to ask her how I can get in touch with the authors of the play. If I can contact them and they give me permission to use their play, I think Sophia s idea is a good idea.

I think the site owner will know how to get in touch with the authors because she is offering their play as a free resource for families homeschooling their children. So, she must have gotten permission from someone to host and distribute it.

I contacted the owner of the website, Ann Zeise A to Z Home s Cool
http://homeschooling.gomilpitas.com/
which hosts the play http://www.aellea.com/script/littlewomen.txt
that I simplified.

She said that it is open sourced and not under copyright restrictions. Anyone can use all of the plays on her site for free, (but not commercially).
