Needing for help for my 10th and 11th graders

Hello everyone!

I have been thinking of asking for your help for long time ago but I delayed it every time thinking it will be better when time passes.

I m working in a scholarshipped private highschool- but it s a bit different from the other highschools as in this highschool the students don t pay any money even if its private. This is my first year and the students profile is not very good in terms of education. I am teaching 9th- 10th and 11th graders.

Since 9th graders are new in this school too, we have a very good connection with them. I really enjoy every second of my class and I know they enjoy it too. We have a good realtionship other than the lessons. I m a skills teacher and I teach reading, writing, speaking and listening- plus I m a native teacher so they have to talk to me in English.

Now my problem is with my 10th and 11th graders...I have never thought of teaching teenages, I have an excellent relationship with the children but maybe because of my age- 24- my teenages don t respect me enough. They under so much stress, I know and try to understand this but I m losing my tolerance every time I encounter a disrespectful behaviour. I really don t know how to respond or how to react to them. I tried talking to them but since their English level is not that high, we couldn t solve anything. I yelled, spoke in private, threatened with the administration, dismissed from classroom, spoke in the friends level, ignored... Every possible thing! but eventually it doesn t work. They kind of react to me and my lessons- actually they are reacting to English lessons- thus to all the English teachers as a whole, but I think I am the one who gets the most disrespectful reactions since I don t understand every word they say...

I desperately need your help, please give me an advice. Cuz we have another term ahead of us and I can t go on like this. We couldn t create the connection we have with 9th graders and that s so sad... Is it me? this is the question I m asking recently to myself...

I would appreciate any suggestions!
Thank you in advance...

Have a look at these. Just one piece of advice, never shout or yell at your students, it only makes things worse, try to stay as calm as possible. You are very young, things will improve with experience, weve all been there so dont worry. The more you enjoy teaching, the better the results.Best of luck.

If you google teenage classroom management you can find a lot of useful things.
Be patient and you will find the right way to deal with your students.
Good luck!
