do you know any synonymous phrases to "turning the tables on sb" in English? i find it difficult to explain this expression to my students. I know that it is about losing an adbvantage by one party and gaining it by the other but still I am not convinced that my students understand this phrase

Hello Jarek,

It is not synonymous, but a somewhat similar expression to,

"To turn the tables on someone"

is:

"Now, the shoe is on the other foot."

It means that an individual has to endure an unpleasant experience which, previously, he was inflicting on others.

"The policeman in charge of the Anti-Drunkeness Campaign was arrested for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol."

"Now, the shoe is on the other foot!"
