Hi! I have a question. Can you explain me where we put the word by in a passive sentence? After the verbs? At the end of the sentence? Where?Which sentence is correct?
A lot of time is spent by Mary in chat rooms.   OR
A lot of time is spent in chat rooms by Mary .
A new computer was bought by us last year.   OR
A new computer was bought last year by us .
Sarah was given a new mobile phone by her father. OR
Sarah was given by her father a new mobile phone.

As for your third example, the direct object will always go before the agent.
 
In the others, the passive voice usually sounds very artificial, as it does here

Also, letting students do these kinds of exercises is an excellent way of teaching them contrived language nobody would ever dare to use in a real situation.

In fact, we often teach our students to avoid the passive whenever possible. The passive voice is weak and, well, passive. Try to use the active voice unless it is contrived or you have a good reason to accentuate a direct or indirect object.
