When you talk about smth that happens everyday, i. e. is habitual then you say "I take a bus to school" meaning you usually go to school by bus. When you talk about a particular moment in time when you are in a hurry and you re afraid to be late for the bus, then you could say, "I have a bus to catch":)
Here s a dictionary definition:
catch something to be in time for a bus, train, plane, etc. and get on itWe caught the 12.15 from Oxford.I must goI have a train to catch.
I hope I haven t confused you:)

P. S. @ady.acuna catch is not slang, its perfectly normal:)

Also, there is a regional difference.

UK English - Catch the bus   (It s not slang.)
US English - Take the bus

We can also get a bus.
My car broke down so I had to get a bus.
He gets the bus to school every day.

"Examples"

1, Do you take/catch the bus to school or walk? (everyday)

2, Are you walking to school today or catching the bus? (not everyday)

3, I take the bus everyday to school. (everyday)

4, I catch the bus today but tomorrow I will take the taxi. (not everyday)

And as Apodo says......

UK English = Catch/Take the bus (and isn t slang)
US English = Take the bus.

But British English we would use both depending on some examples you see above.
