the usa

I tried to explain sth to my students today and I simply stuck. What I wanted to refer to is America/ the USA being world s watchdog/ police officer.

I can t for the life of me remember the exact wording of it - but what I had in mind was that the USA prides itself on being a leading defender of democracy/ freedom but has the same issues  to resolve on their home turf

is it correct to say: the USA as a watchdog? as a world s police officer? Or is it another way of saying this?
