ideas needed

nice morning, afternoon, evening, night to all of you dear friends!

i am in need of ideas... the thing is that i have a friend who teaches 1st grade and asked me to help her find ideas of hands on activities to teach vocabulary with initial sound of the letter c.  i ve thinking all morning but since i dont teach 1st grade i dont know what to tell her because the thing that comes to my mind i think would be hard for them. So if you know of something or you have any suggestions that i can use to make her a worksheet please let me know i will be in debt!!!

Hiya Liz,

I teach 1st grade children and I use finger phonics big books to teach them the sounds. Each sound has a motion asociated, for instance, letter c a flamenco dancer playing the castanets.
I tell them a story related to a family going to Spain on holidays. They visit Castles and dance flamenco with castanets. Sound k is the same but the motion isnt, for that we point to the sky as looking at a kite. There is plenty of stuff on the internet to get ideas for printouts and teach them other words with those sounds: cat, candles, cake, camel, count, cool, comic, car...etc. They can also model letters with playdough. Or cook real or toy cookies and write letter c on the cookie or their letter name, later bake them in  their toy kitchen!!! Hope its helpful. Happy weekend!!

Missing FC - put 6-10 FC on the ground, students are sitting in a circle. Review the vocabulary. Cover all fc by a tablecloth and remove one FC. Ask which one is missing.
Dominoes.
Memory cards - Pair game (picture + word),
Giant boardgame designed with big A3 flashcards/posters on the floor of the classroom / at the backyard.

I use flashcards and they are very helpful. The procedure is like this:

Take up to ten flashcards, in this case, with the words which start with C.
Firstly ask them "what is this?" After you get the answer, make them repeat after you.
Next, tell them you ll play a game. Class against you. You will turn the flashcards back and ask them to guess what it is. They have 3 shots. If they can know, they get 1 point. If they can t know it in 3 shots, teacher gets 1 point.

I used this game a lot in 1st grades, it became like a tradition everytime I teach new vocabulary Smile They just like to win over the teacher! This year, I had to substitute a kindergarten class and they got even more excited Thumbs Up

Hope it is useful Wink
