But in the right context the other version can also be correct.

It depends on what the important information is. This is a non-defining relative clause - the information which is between the brackets is extra information.
The Stranger, which was written by Albert Camus, was published in 1942. - The year it was published is the information you want to convey. Who it �s written by is just extra info.
