About my deaf student...

Thank you very much for your great advice on my yesterday s question about supporting my deaf student in class.

I agree that it doesn t seem right to put this 8 year old deaf girl into an English school when she barely can hear or speak her own language. Our international school provides British National Curriculum to the children of the expats living in China.
The girl is from South Korea, from a very rich family. I guess for parents it s a matter of fashion or prestige to place their child into an expensive international school. I agree, in her situation she would benefit from learning her own language properly first.

The thing is her parents try to make her feel normal, so she doesn t know sign language and she s never been to a specialist school before. They keep saying that she is okay, just keep her happy. In our school ESL students stay in ESL class full day and only go for sports and music to the specialist  teachers.

I ll try to do what I can; it s a learning experience for me...

Thanks again SO MUCH for your help!!!!

hi , i read your post. someone told me that nowadays there are lots of new techniques and devices that can help deaf people. one of my friends cousin was totally deaf but with operation he can hear sounds . doctors put some device in his ear. the mdicine has changed a lot. the parents should consult the doctors else where through internet.
i hope it can help. in the end with your help the girl might become a super lady just like helen keller. read about her and you ll know how to handle this problem.

Well, doesn t that just take the cake! This nearly deaf girl is expected to learn THREE languages?! (Korean, local dialect of Chinese or Mandarin, and English) Sad, but without special help, she s going to have a hard enough time with one. Honestly, her parents are being unrealistic about her education. As I said in the earlier thread, she needs to learn one language well before she attempts to learn others. And Chinese or Korean Sign Language may be the best place to start. It s too bad the parents think more about their prestige than the good of their daughter. Functional would be better for her than "normal."

However, I don t see your headmaster/principal turning down the money this family brings, either. So I guess you have to live with it. If the whole curriculum except gym and music is in English, then I d recommend extra work or tutoring in English instead of a music class. For now, keep your academic expectations relatively low and praise any improvement you see in her learning. But enforce the discipline and be sure the parents agree with you, at least at school. The parents sound pretty clueless, actually, so remind them that a well-behaved child reflects well on them.

Unfortunately, janaesl, reputable surgeons won t perform cochlear implants on people with any usable hearing, because the operation will destroy any normal hearing left. There s also no guarantee that it will work and there s always a risk with surgery so close to the brain.

I think you should face it as a challenge, I have a deaf student and I didn t know sign language, so I had to deal with it and prepare lessons specially for him. He doesn t know his mother language properly because their first language is not their mother tongue, its just like they invented their own way of communication (body sign).

After him I started doing a sign language course and in nowadays I teach him very well, I speak in English and as the same time I translate everything by sign language. I think you should do a course like this too. And another thing, don t say this things about the girl, if she is rich or not it does not mind, the point is to teach her English even though it is gonna be difficult.
