I think it s a kind of blues, the music.

Wikipedia:  "Walking Blues" is a blues standard first recorded by Son House for Paramount Records in 1930 and again for the Library of Congress in 1941. It was notably covered by his one-time protg Robert Johnson in 1936 and by many other blues musicians since.

This is a saying in English:

depressed state of mind + blues

Walking = the way we walk in the depressing sate of mind.

So it s walking blues =  I knew that I needed to walk around all day in a depressed state of mind (the blues) or in an effort to ease/lighten/alleviate a depressed state of mind.

I ve heard of the blues , being down and depressed, but not the walking blues.

Hello!  I think that walking blues comes from a wonderful Paul Simon song.  I don t think that it s really an expression.  It seems to me to be a poetic use of language.
