You can use "quake". As in "earth was quaking".

Even though it ´s called an earthquake, it sounds very natural to say "The earth was shaking". Since "quake" is not commonly used in English, "shaking" would be more common.

Ask the people in Christchurch, New Zealand and they would say that the earth was definitely shaking.
